ADR TRANSPORT
The purpose of the ADR regulation is to prevent risks associated with the loading, unloading, and transportation of substances and objects that are dangerous to people and the environment. Therefore, they are classified internationally based on their chemical-physical composition and the resulting potential for hazardous reactions. Dangerous goods are divided into 13 classes. Each class is associated with a specific hazard, the main ones being: Flammable, Explosive, Corrosive, Radioactive, Toxic, Infectious, Oxidizing. In Europe, the transportation of dangerous goods is regulated by several agreements: the ADR for road, the RID for rail, and the ADN for inland waterways. Operating procedures for road transportation are governed by the ADR Agreement, the latest update of which came into force on January 1, 2013.

BATTERY TRANSPORT
On January 1, 2021, the new ADR regulation for the transport of dangerous goods by road came into force. The regulation will be applicable on a voluntary basis until June 30, while its application will be mandatory starting July 1, 2021. Among the new provisions of ADR 2021 are some regarding the shipment of lithium batteries by road, which are probably the most dangerous products to ship at this time as well as those subject to the most stringent controls by the competent authorities. Due to the regulations' not always straightforward interpretation, package preparers often encounter difficulties when packaging a lithium battery (UN3090/UN3480), a device containing a lithium battery, or a device with a lithium battery (UN3091/UN3481).
